“Walk The Talk!

“Walk The Walk!”

…to show that something is true by your actions and not just from your words…

Come up with your own saying! It doesn’t matter what your saying is, what matters is that you “do it!”

How am I “doing it?”

• I take out 2 hours every day for training myself! This doesn’t include my running or my personal training on weekends! Why? This is a promise to myself and to clients so they are assured that my keeping myself in shape makes a statement that “it’s my word that is important!”

I ran 5000 miles during the year I turned 50! In 2024 I will turn 60 and I will run 6000 miles to celebrate! This thing of every 10 years and increasing by 1000 miles will continue(ex. In 10 years I’ll turn 70 & will run 7000 miles). THIS IS NOT about me stating how great I am that I do this, it is about my clients “knowing” that what they decide they want to achieve, they “know” they can do it irregardless of what others, external to them, say.

So what promises have you made to yourself? It’s important that you keep all promises but especially the ones that you make to yourself about YOURSELF! Why? Because those are the ones that you have most control over! We can do and achieve so much more than we think we can! I know this to be true! You can also make it YOUR TRUTH if you would want to!

Don’t put your faith into exercise equipment! Put your trust into something more “sustainable,” and that is you! Your mind & body is what you brought to this world and how you’ll leave it, so if you’re looking to improve your life then start there! It is your “point of reference!” When you are looking to make positive changes, rely on what you know best! Your mind/body!

It’s getting closer! In January 1, 2024 I will be keeping track of #miles I run and will complete 6000 miles by December 31, 2024 and hopefully sooner than that! Anyone who would like to share some of those miles with me just let me know! I’m sharing this information “early” and “often” so it’s “OUT THERE” so it will be harder to not follow through on it! In my mind, that is what one should do with important goals that one sets! Thanks! Rick “The” Trainer/Inside Out Fitness

To folks thinking of taking up exercising …

Before you order a bunch of exercise equipment…

————————-

Try to create exercises using only your body and what is around you first. This will help you learn more about your body (especially muscles and joints) and you will have a “leg up” on what really works for you!

————————

Tip: 1- you will be using “gravity” as a major “helper!” 2- with new exercises, start slowly, use just your body weight at first and stop, immediately, if you have pain! (P.s. if you are going too fast, you might hurt something before you can stop once you feel the pain!) 3- expect to not necessarily “enjoy” the feeling of exercise the first few sessions (give it time!) 4- You’ll want to quit (often!) but instead, check in with yourself every day and ask yourself, “SELF- what do I get from the exercise if I quit?” The answer : nothing but if you keep working at it, you may not get everything you would like but it’s guaranteed that you will get something ! 5- keep in mind that your shoulder & hip JOINTS are type: “BALL & socket” which allows much more movement than any other joint in your body… but, as they say, if you don’t use it… you lose it… what’s more, you gain something , pain!! You don’t want that! Take care my friends ! #pain #ballandsocketjoint #shoulderpain #shoulderjoint #hipjoint #hipjointpain #rangeofmotion #newexercise #NewExercises #moveslow #dontgiveup #neverstoplearning #neverstopexploring #neverstopevolving #neverstopmaking #neverstop #hoodrivervalley #hoodriver #columbiagorge #Stevenson #cascadelocks

whole: a single entity comprised of a collection of parts; including all of an entity. “I just had more “parts” to collect, that’s all!” I had collected so many toys (functional Training equipment) and I thought that I had everything I needed. That was before my functional training studio burned down on August 29, 2023. About 10 days after that happened i really thought I was doomed! No more studio, no more equipment… what to do? Then I was running down the road in Hood River and “Chuck,” my 78 year old client pulled his car over and rolled down the passenger window and yelled out, “Rick, you know what I need is a good workout!” I said, “Chuck I don’t have any equipment and no place to train!” He swiftly said, “I have some equipment and we can train at my house!” And BOOM! Like that I started training my clients again, some outside and some at their homes! But what I “still” wasn’t expecting was that that “change” got me to using my brain more (knowledge of the human body) and finding that, in a way, all of those “toys” were (I was letting happen) keeping me from being a better trainer! I had to “create” more with my mind and that began to “reap” some mighty fine rewards in the way of “superior workouts” for my clients! Who would’ve thought?! #superiorworkouts #bettertomorrow #bettertraining #bettertrainer #improvedhealth #improvedtrainer #betterpersonaltrainer #ImprovedOutcomes #movementtherapy #strongwomen #hoodrivervalley #hoodriveroregon #columbiarivergorge

What? The fact that on August 29th 2023 my studio burned down and I lost the biggest supply of “functional training equipment” in the Columbia River Gorge!” And… somehow that has lead me to be a much better “Functional Trainer?” How? Well, many of us know that we do not like to make big “changes” even if it would create a better outcome! Well this made me make changes! I have started doing in-home and outdoors training. This means that when I’m wanting to do the next thing with a client, I can’t just reach up and grab a different toy! Why? Because my toys (functional Training equipment) is all burned up and melted! So I’ve got to do something else. So what do I do? I start thinking more about the human body and what “more” I can get out of it by “applying” what is around me. Maybe we use that picnic table or that tree or that big rock! But whatever I end up using, it going to be something that doesn’t move so I need to know more about the human body, especially muscles and joints, and what we can do with the body! That is how I’m getting to be a better trainer without all that equipment! The “Functional Training Equipment” is now the equipment you came into this world with! Your body! Oh yeah! I’m excited! #pumped #movemore #functionalnutrition #foryou #functionaltraining #functional #functionalneurology #humanbeings #humanbodyparts #humanbodyparts #humanmovement #hoodriver #hoodriveroregon #columbiarivergorge #columbiariver #Stevensonwaterfront #stevensonwashington

What’s the difference? “Piston” style training & “Functional Training?”

First let’s look at “piston style,” which is usually an “in & out” or “out and back!” way of training. Either way resistance is traveling on the same path in both directions. What’s the problem? Over time if you “only” use piston style it will be very easy to injure yourself because you are “beating to death, so to speak,” the same areas of your body and “injury” is sure to happen! Also you won’t prepare yourself for the “non-piston” way the life hands to each of us! So what to do? Either switch to “Functional Training” or at least incorporate some functional training into your workouts along with piston style so that you give your body a “respite” of sorts from the continuous “beating” you are receiving from the piston style!

Now we take a peek at my favorite, “Functional Training!” What is it? It’s when you do much less “isolation” exercises and with each exercise you do more circular type movements! Why do functional training? We’ve already talked about how it helps prevent injuries but it does so much more! What? It mimics what each of us must do in real life situations! In real life we don’t normally “isolate” a single muscle or a “joint!” That would be very odd and also “counterproductive!” What do we do? We take life straight on which usually means we adhere to more circular movements! When we “live life” as it presents itself, we have to deal with many “unorthodox” situations and many require that we move many parts of our bodies at the same time and that we deal with “imbalances” found in our everyday situations!

So before you accept a specific way of handling the issues in life, make sure you “assess” all avenues fully! “Anne” is my “Athlete/Month!” For…

August 2023! She makes a great one! – “The” Trainer

I train all ages! The following is dedicated to folks 60 years of age and older…

Falling and fracturing a hip at an older age is something that you definitely don’t want to do! So to my mind, the thing to work on (other than strengthening bones, smoking or alcohol usage) is to not fall in the first place! Here are a few things to “work on” to avoid a fall. 1- don’t look at your feet all the time. (It may seem the safe thing to do but if you are ambulating and always looking at your feet then you are not looking for “life” events that are happening around you that may cause you to fall! The thing to do is to gain “confidence” while ambulating by “preparing”) 2- if you move to your left then move your left foot first. (To the right the right foot first. This allows you to keep your feet under your shoulders and avoid crossing them over each other) 3- to keep balanced, move your feet the same amount of space (ex. If you move left and move left foot first then move your right foot towards the left at the same distance you just moved the left and never get your feet really close together because it’s harder to hold your balance with feet too close together. Ideally, keep your feet approximately shoulder width apart. 4- if you find yourself on a slick footpath then try to place your entire bottom of your shoe down at approximately the same time and go very slowly. (Placing only a portion of the bottom of your shoe down and then applying weight will much more likely cause a slip). 5- if you feel that a cane or walking stick will help you in some cases then make sure you have one handy. 6- get some training specific for potential “fall related“ incidents.

Generally speaking, if one starts any new exercise with a slow warmup, using low weight(or no weight) and stops immediately if pain starts(stopping early is key), then it should be ok to proceed. Pain is our body’s Way Of saying “You’ve had enough for now”! But going slowly is how you detect any problems early enough to prevent further issues. If you are going too fast, in the exercise, you may not detect the pain early enough to prevent damage! The Trainer

It’s all you! The Trainer
